一、supplementary 和complementary 由于意思相近、拼写相似，所以常常让人困惑，其实它们的意义差别明显。
supplementary 的意思是附加或补充……使之更好更完善，例如：
The technical report needs supplementary references. （这份技术报告还需要补充参考文献。）
The authors should add supplementary explanations for their experimental results.（作者还应该对他们的实验结果做补充解释。）
A supplementary protocol is required to ensure security of the system.（还需要一个补充协议来保证系统安全性。）
complementary 的意思是互补的，它的意义在集合论中最清晰：
A is the complementary set of B.（A是B的补集。）
一个数的补码是complementary的同根词complement ，这是因为原码与补码对于模2的n次方是互补的。

三、extra表达超出人们期望的“额外”，例如：
The introduction of the protocol incurs significant extra cost to user ends.（该协议的引入给用户端带来明显的额外开销。）
How do we deal with users’ extra security requirements?（我们如何处理用户额外的安全需求。）
Additional 是extra的同义词，可以替代extra。
四、有一个单词peripheral 偶尔会与上述单词产生混淆，它在计算机领域用于表达外设：a peripheral device，它的“附加的”意思表示次要（not so important ），实际上与上述单词不属于一类。
